Often using a LAN inside a home, users will encounter one or more PC's that refust to renew the IP address and bring the network back to a fully usable state. However this took care of that problem for us I hope it will for other XP home and PRO users.

Iv'e personally found a dramatic increase in web browsing after clearing the Windows XP DNS cache.

To clear it type the following in a command prompt: ipconfig /flushdns

Only the webmaster has to know about every single script error. To turn off the error messages that pop-up, do this:

1. Go to Tools, Internet Options. Click Advanced on the far right.
2. In the browsing set, you should see one that says "Display Notification of Every Script Error". Uncheck it if its checked.
3. Also, click "Disable Script Debugging" to stop that, also.

The tweak is simple. Beside the QoS and others around the Internet for the new XP OS, I found out that native drivers sometimes slow you down (cable and xDSL users). So if you have applied all tweaks and you are still having slow downs try reinstalling your NICs drivers.

I have reinstalled my NIC drivers (I own a CNET generic NIC, native driver is installed with OS) with the latest found on their website, and now I can really apretiate all my available bandwith. The difference is noticeable. My web pages now load almost instantly where they used to take even a minute!

As allways, this tweak worked well for me, but may not work with everybody, just try! You can go back to native drivers anytime.

Aimp Player Portable

There was a bug in Windows 2000 that would cause the scheduled tasks folder to be searched when ever the user would browse network drives. Microsoft developed a fix for this bug. The fix fixed the problem and it also had nice side affect of speeding up browsing of Microsoft networks. Below are instructions how to apply the fix.

1. Open up regedit.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/Current Version/Explorer/RemoteComputer/NameSpace

3. Find a key named {D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

4. Right click on it and delete it.

5. Restart

Note: Make sure you backup the registry prior to making changes.

This tweak is also valid for any WinXP version, and I have heard other operating systems to include Linux.

Symptom: 10 to 30 seconds delay or maybe even up to 1 minute when loading any web page. Once a web page is up, full internet speed is available, also downloads are not affected by speed loss. If you have TCP/IP version 6 installed this is highly likely the problem.

How to check if IPv6 is installed (WinXp): Open up the control pannel. If it is titled "pick a category", click "switch to classic view." Open "Network Connections." Here there should be a list of your internet connections, they could be network cards, dial-up connections, or others. Find the one you connect to the internet with, for example "Local Area Connection #1" Right-click on its icon and choose properties. In the middle of the properties window you will see a smaller window that is titled "This connection uses the following items." Some of the common items are: "Client for microsoft networks" "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)"

How to fix (Windows XP): In this windows if you see one of the items labeled "Microsoft TCP/IP version 6" select it and click the uninstall button. DO NOT UNINSTALL "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" this will disable your internet connectivity completely.

Other Notes: As far as I know this will be the next internet standard, but for now using the standard "Internet Protocal (TCP/IP)" will work. You shouldn't find any problems uninstalling IPv6. You may ask how did this get installed? IPv6 is listed in windows updates and could be installed this way. I am guessing that IPv6 slows down web connections because most web servers aren't using it yet.

56K Tweaks

One of the most frustrating things to have with a computer is a slow internet connection and 56K is about as slow as it gets these days. I feel the pain that 56K users have and hope that by following this thread they can experience a faster more reliable internet connection. There are a few things that one must understand prior to tweaking their 56K connections. The first is that it is actually a 53.3K connection since that is the speed that the FCC limits you to, on top of that most dialup users actually connect in the 40,000 – 50,000K range, which is excellent by dialup standards. Being that you actually connect in the 40-50K range you need to understand that your maximum throughput is only going to be around 6 kilobytes per second.

MOST OF THESE TWEAKS WILL NOT WORK WITH AOHELL, AOHELL USERS READ HERE.

• First and most important is for you to download the latest drivers for your modem from the manufacturer’s website.

• Make sure you have a “clean” phone line, no static on your line. If you have static you will have a very low connect speed and no tweak will fix that.

Uninstall all the protocols you don’t need. If this is a stand alone pc then all you need is Internet Protocol TCP/IP.

Select the settings button and make sure all the boxes are checked.

Setting your COM port speed properly:

Right click on My Computer and select properties – hardware – device manager – select your COM port – port settings tab – bits per second 128000 (you may need to set this a few times to make it stick).
